Julie Malen’s mixed-media sculptures and installations collage figurativism, wearable art, digital imagery, and material exploration in ways that blur the boundaries between living systems.
Malen holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and she is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been exhibited nationally including at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, CO, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, MI, and Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ. In addition to her studio practice, Malen works as a technician in the sculpture shop at Columbia University, in New York, NY. Malen has also taught visual art courses at several art institutions nationally including VCUarts, in Richmond, VA and Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. Malen has participated in numerous artist residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Madison, ME, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO, Mildred’s Lane in Narrowsburg, NY, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.
